关于more修饰动词时的位置问题
原句：If they had ever cared more about the child, he wouldn’t let them down now.（错综时间条件句的虚拟语气）
已知 more 做副词修饰单个动词时，一般位于动词之后，如：I love you more than anyone in the world.
但本句中的谓语动词为 “had cared”，这个时候应该一般把副词放在助动词“had”和实义动词“cared”之间吧？（或者句首句尾）

在 ... had ever cared more about the child ...中， more 的词序是正确的。例如：I promised Mum that I'd help more with the housework . 我答应妈妈我会多帮忙做家务。（摘自《朗文当代高级英语辞典》more / adv词条）这里的 I'd = I would，其中的would是助动词，would help 是过去将来时形式。
