第二句这里的“ready to repel the attacks”可以理解为“troops”的后置定语，由于过长所以放在状语“along the border”后面嘛？

1 你把破折号写成连字符了。This is a long descent=这是很长的下坡，破折号后面对对descent的补充说明：从漂亮的峡谷到下面的村庄，长度大约20英里。

2 可以这么理解。
