我同意胡老师的解答。根据柯林斯的解释：give up 是及物动词（give是不及物动词，但give up是及物动词），既然是及物动词，它后面接的就是宾语（动名词可以作宾语，现在分词不可以作宾语），而不是状语。又如英国著名语言学家Swan在其名著PEU中的解释也是这样的：

在词典如《朗文当代高级英语辞典》把 give up， put off ， give up doing something 和 put off doing something作为单独的词条收录。从例句可以看出，如果 it 或者 them作 give up， put off 的宾语，必须放在 up和 off的前面，名词作宾语时，可以放在 up和 off的前面或者后面。如果后接动词，必须用doing形式，而且放在 give up和 put off 的后面，至于doing 是动名词还是现在分词、作宾语还是其它成分，可以不考虑，记住用法即可。

我谈一下我的理解：以give up 接宾语为例：up 是副词，give up后有宾语，那么，give 是及物动词，所以也可以说give sth up. 如果后面不接宾语，可以看作不及物。如：I don't want to give up.

网友的问题是：give up 接doing，doing 为什么不放在up前。put off doing 也是同理。这是问题的关键。

道理很简单，give up 和put off等短语，当宾语为名词或代词时才可以提前。doing 是gerund,
