when从句是表语从句还是状语从句

请问老师：

when引导的从句是做表语从句，还是状语从句？怎么判断？

倾向于把这里的when从句解释为时间状语从句，is解释为不及物动词，牛津释义为: to happen at a time or in a place(发生)，而when作为从属连词，其释义为: conj. at or during the time that(在…时候)。

如把when从句解释为表语从句，可能会把when解释为融合关系副词，引导名词性关系分句，相当于the time when，根据语意，Gratitude is the time不妥。如果把when解释为连接副词，具有疑问含义，其释义为at what time，语意也不妥。

when引导的从句是表语从句。如果when引导的从句是状语从句，主句应该有主语和谓语。

句子是否改为这样通顺点：Being grateful is when you appreciate what people have done for you.此时when引导的是状语从句。

原句Gratitude is when you feel appreciation for people and things有文章出处吗？我感觉有些读不通，比如feel appreciation for somebody的搭配好像就有问题，英文词典似乎找不到这种用法和结构。
