She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails. She carried the purse slung across her shoulder. It was about eleven o'clock at night, dark. She was walking alone when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The purse strap came off, but he pulled so hard that he lost his balance. 如果You should be my boy看作虚拟语气从句，为什么用should be，而不是were?

在You should be my boy这句中的should是情态动词，有情态有虚拟。表达“情态”是这问妇女对这个犯错误的孩子善良（Instead of giving him a sound beating,the woman treated the boy kindly.），表达虚拟是：这位妇女好像是这个孩子的母亲(as if she were his own mother)，显然，用should既表达了善良情感，又表达了were的虚拟含义，如果单纯用were,只是虚拟（as if she were his own mother），用should表达了1.Instead of giving him a sound beating,the woman treated the boy kindly。2as if she were his own mother.
