我想请问一下两者作为“值得”时在用法在有什么区别?
例如:

普通大众级:
这个句子用merit或deserve都可以。二者本就可以互换,只不过merit比deserve更formal点而已。所以在非正式场合的日常交谈中,用merit的频率要远远低于deserve。
作家文豪级:
二者虽然可以互换,但意思上还是有那么一丢丢区别。比如你想强调某人是通过自己的努力、自己的技能或者自己的资历而“值得”某种荣誉,用merit即可(所以此时“值得”的意思等同于earn)。而如果你想表达某人无earn的必要,或者无需付出大量的精力就“值得”某项大奖,用deserve. 前者如中国朱元璋,一路爬摸滚打最终登上龙椅,这是merit;而后者如英国查尔斯,无论其年龄、资历、才干如何,伊丽莎白女王过世,他就能继承王位,这叫deserve。因为他deserve to be a king.
当然,merit一般都用于好的场合,而deserve则无论好坏都能用。所以我们很少会说merit the punishment,而会说deserve the punishment。
