普通大众级：
这个句子用merit或deserve都可以。二者本就可以互换，只不过merit比deserve更formal点而已。所以在非正式场合的日常交谈中，用merit的频率要远远低于deserve。
作家文豪级：
二者虽然可以互换，但意思上还是有那么一丢丢区别。比如你想强调某人是通过自己的努力、自己的技能或者自己的资历而“值得”某种荣誉，用merit即可（所以此时“值得”的意思等同于earn）。而如果你想表达某人无earn的必要，或者无需付出大量的精力就“值得”某项大奖，用deserve. 前者如中国朱元璋，一路爬摸滚打最终登上龙椅，这是merit；而后者如英国查尔斯，无论其年龄、资历、才干如何，伊丽莎白女王过世，他就能继承王位，这叫deserve。因为他deserve to be a king.
当然，merit一般都用于好的场合，而deserve则无论好坏都能用。所以我们很少会说merit the punishment，而会说deserve the punishment。
