介词后面是宾语还是状语(怎么判断)

为什么介词后面有时候是宾语，有时候又是状语？

The school lies in the center of the city.

为什么in the center of the city是状语，为什么不能理解成in是介词，the center of the city是lie的宾语？

lie是不及物动词，怎么能有宾语？介词必须后接宾语构成介词短语，介词短语作成分。你既然知道in是介词，那么其后的名词就只能是介词的宾语，介词短语作不及物动词的状语。
