用传统语法解释：先行词variations被such修饰，其后的定语从句由关系代词as引导，as指代variations，并在从句中作主语。所以并不存在省略something的问题。你加上something就是语法错误了。

现代语法的解释是：as引导比较分句，比较对应项在比较分句作主语必须省略，所以as后接谓语动词。在as和had之间你还是不能加入任何词。
