我也提供一个版本的解释，来自 Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary 的 between 词条：If two or more people have an amount of something between them, they have this amount together, when the amounts that all the individuals have are added together（如果两个或两个以上的人之间有一定数量的东西，那么当所有个人拥有的数量加在一起时，他们就有了这个数量）。该词典给出的对应例句是：

They have both been married once before and have five children between them. 他们两人都曾结过一次婚，加起来共有5个孩子。

另外这种用法还经常用于金钱，所以《朗文多功能英汉双解词典》给出了这样的解释：if people have an amount of money between them, that is the total amount they have。所给例句为：
