我在英文出版物上看到一个这样的句子：

Imagine my astonishment then, as I tentatively climbed the caravan steps and walked into a mini palace.

在看了曹老师对于 as we know it 的解释后，对这个从句，我有下面的理解：

1. 虽然这个句子形式上是时间状语从句，但作用是补充说明前面的名词my astonishment，作用相当于定语从句。

2. 曹老师说as前一般没有逗号，而此处加逗号的原因是 as从句和then共同修饰my astonishment，并列成分间加了逗号。如果没有then，原句应是Imagine my astonishment as I tentatively climbed the caravan steps and walked into a mini palace.

不知道这样的理解是否正确。

Imagine my astonishment then, as I tentatively climbed the caravan steps and walked into a mini palace.

主句谓语动词为imaging，如果把as理解为时间状语从句，则意为着as表示的是想象这个动词发生的时间，这显然不符合逻辑，as从句是过去时，表示发生在过去的事，而想象是祈使句的谓语，这个谓语动词是不可能在过去发生的。所以，排除as从句为时间状语从句是很容易的。那么as从句是什么从句呢？注意时间副词then是astonishment的后置定语，当时的惊讶。as从句是对then的补充说明，剑桥英语语法把这种起补充说明作用的结构称为补充语supplement。所以我们可以根据剑桥英语语法把as分句分析为then的补充语分句。

如果这个句子没有then，如下句：

Imagine my astonishment as I tentatively climbed the caravan steps and walked into a mini palace.
