far的比较级

far的比较级有farther和further，我认为farther一般用于具体意义上的距离，further用于抽象意义上的程度。而我最近遇到了walk further 这里是不是表示走的更远，所以further的范围比farther的更大，可以替代farther，对吗？

【1】father 主要指“空间/时间”即“物理距离/心理距离”更远。

The nearer the church, the farther from God.离教堂越近,离上帝越远。

The farther hill is five kilometers away.那座更远的小山在五公里以外。

Guangzhou is farther from Beijing than Shanghai is.广州比上海离北京远。

Germany is farther from the United States than England is.德国离美国比英国离美国远。

As a family we grew farther and farther apart.我们一家人越来越疏远了。

【2】further 主要指“抽象意义进一步；在更大程度上；在更大范围内”

The police decided to investigate further.警方决定作进一步调查。

Curiosity has incited him to go into further investigation.好奇心激励他做进一步的调查研究。

Our object is to further strengthen friendly relations between the two countries.

我们的目标是进一步加强两国之间的友好关系。

【3】备注：有时候2者可以互相使用都表示“物理距离”

We had walked further than I had realized.=We had walked farther than I had realized.

在我不知不觉中我们已走得很远。

walk further 的further在一定语境有时不一定指距离，可指“进一步”的意思，这时不能和farther 替换。如make further effort。
