5 虚拟语气主句可否用did

句中的条件句显然是虚拟语气，应该表示在当时立场上对将来的虚拟，但是主句使用了did，而非could/would等。
这段部分的内容是在1941年9月的立场上，而历史上这个行动在1941年年底就失败了，所以作者使用were to表示对未来相反的假设，似乎也不符合语法，这个句子是否是对虚拟语气的滥用？
