我们继续研究《剑桥英语语法》p1110 的这样一个例句：

The difficulties are even greater than appears at first sight.

如果按照此句型重新改写为：

The girls are much taller than appears at first sight.

两个句子结构完全一样。你认为《剑桥英语语法》的作者能接受这个句子吗？

I was wondering which sentence is more natural and why. Thank you
1.The girls are much taller than appears at first sight.
2.The girls are much taller than they appear at first sight.

然后回答者说：I’m a little confused too — not by why seem doesn’t work that way, but by why appear does! Or maybe it’s just how they sound to me?

评论区发不了图片，我发到这里，可以看出回答者是从平时她自己的用法考虑的。感觉就类似汉语，我们平时说的一些话，可能惯用，但是不一定合汉语语法，再就是一些合语法的句子，我们平常未必使用，我上高中时，语文课改错题，深有体会。
