我们比较一下这个句子：

He now and then went even further than is considered permissible in that country.

和《牛津用法指南》上的句子：

He worries more than is necessary. (not than it/what is necessary).

这二个句子的结构是一样的，都是主语+不及物动词+程度状语的比较级（further其实也是距离的程度）+than从句。than从句为系表结构，is necessary 和 is considered permissible。逻辑分析可知，系表结构的主语应该是doing something，而不是something。即than分句的主语为嵌入分句，而不是一个名词结构。由于嵌入分句隐含了比较对应项，所以嵌入分句可以并通常省略。如果这里使用what，则意味着重复了比较对应项，违反了语法原则。这就是为什么《指南》认为不能用what。至于有人用what，也是语法错误。如果犯错误的人的比例达到一定程度，也许会被人们认可，但语法错误还是语法错误，顶多是虱子多了不痒的问题。但至少目前语法书上没有明确这种what使用是规范的英语，只看到语法书或指南说不要用what。

我觉得这个 what 必须保留。因为这个 what 并非主句比较项（包括渗透后的比较项）的对应项，即这个 what 无法解释为比较项的对应成分。但下面这个 what 最好省略，因为它可以解释为主句比较项smaller size or amount 的对应项：

It is smaller in size or amount than is considered necessary.

这两个释义也许证明了我过去在解答中多次强调的，what 在很多情况下可有可无，意思基本没什么差别。
