converse在此是名词，等于conversation，that引导定语从句修饰converse，并在定语从句中作动词is feeding的直接宾语，the amygdala为间接宾语。not only后省略了介词to，即not only to the converse, 不仅仅对会话作应答。逗号后部分是对respond to faces的补充说明，属于补充语。类似的句子如：I talked with all the students，not only (with) the boys.
