their jobs take on them 这里不应该是被动吗？

我感觉一般都是People take on jobs.

你忽略了这是定语从句省略了作宾语的关系代词that，that指代toll，作take的宾语。take a toll on sb 为习语，意为给某人带来/造成危害或损害。例如：Too much sunlight can take a (heavy) toll on your skin. [=can harm your skin]
