I could see no valley, no farms, no cottages and no church spire -- only a lake. I decided that I must have taken a wrong turning somewhere. So I drove back to the town and began to retrace the route, taking frequent glances at the map. I landed up at the same corner. The curious thing was that the lake was not marked on the map. I felt as if I had stumbled into a nightmare country, as you sometimes do in dreams. And, as in a nightmare, there was nobody in sight to help me. Fortunately for me, as I was wondering what to do next, there appeared on the horizon a man on horseback, riding in my direction. I waited till he came near, then I asked him the way to our old village. He said that there was now no village. I thought he must have misunderstood me, so I repeated its name. This time he pointed to the lake. The village no longer existed because it had been submerged, and all the valley too. The lake was not a natural one, but a man-made reservoir.
1)I felt as if...是方式状语还是表语从句? as you sometimes do in dreams - 方式状语能理解,但是as in a nightmare 缺少do,这是什么比较结构呢?没看懂。
2)riding in my direction 是否可分析伴随状语?all the vallley - 可数名词单数the valley前为什么可以使用all呢?
1 as if 从句为表语从句。as in a nightmare 就像在噩梦中一样。阅读中不必每个句子或结构都要分析,看明白意思即可。这显然是比较分句的一种简略,简略到as+介词短语。意思很清楚了,不用再分析。要学会读书,不做书呆子。
2 riding in my direction 分析为非限制性定语比较好。all可以修饰复数名词、不可数名词和单数名词,修饰单数名词时意为整个,等于the whole valley.
