when从句含义以及如何翻译

A)The two boys were riding their bikes when they heard the cries.
这句话的意思正确理解应该是：
1）当2个男孩听到哭声的时候，他们正在骑自行车。
2）2个男孩正在骑自行车，这时，突然，他们听到了哭声。
有人说是1），有人说是2），究竟应该是哪种含义，为什么呢？
又如这2句：
B) I was visiting the museum when I came acorss a policeman.
C) I was doing my homework when I watched TV.
应该如何翻译呢？有无“突然“的含义？

赵振才教授在《英语常见问题解答大词典》增订版第五版when8 和when13 这两个词条中对when的这种用法进行了详细的分析。如果when前面的句子中有下列情况之一，则 when 通常翻译为“这时”、“突然”：（1）谓语动词是过去进行时；（2）谓语中含有was / were on the point of或者was / were about to ； (3)谓语动词是过去完成时或者过去完成进行时。
