这里的yet在英语词典里有一个解释：

conjunction used to introduse a fact,situation,or quality that is surprising after what you have just said（连词，用于在先前说过的内容引出令人惊讶事实，情况或者品质）。在所给的问题句子当中，在yet之前，作者说We cannot experience the full benefits of a university education without having our ideas challenged（大意是：如果我们的想法没有受到挑战，我们就无法体验到大学教育的全部好处），然后作者用yet引出对其中的challenged加以评论：挑战却能够使我们成长这样一个令人惊讶事实，好处，品质。

在新概念英语第二册有一句：
