It suddenly occurred to one of the workers to open up the box. He was astonished at what he found. A man was lying in the box on top of a pile of woolen goods.

He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away. After he was arrested, the man admitted hiding in the box before the plane left London.

1) 为什么不是on the top of a pile...?

2) at being discovered = at having been discovered ? admitted hiding = admitted having hiden ? 含义相等，语法上正确吗？

on top of与on the top of 之间的区别，类似于 in front of 和 in the front of 之间的区别。

He wrote on the top of the box. 他在纸箱的上面写。写的字在纸箱上。

He sat on top of the wooden box. 他坐在木箱上。他的屁股在木箱外面。

on top of还可以作为复合介词，表示抽象意义：

1. Fig. up-to-date on something; knowing about the current state of something. Ask Mary. She's on top of this issue. This issue is constantly changing. She has to pay attention to it to stay on top of things.

2. Fig. in addition to something. Jane told Bill he was dull. On top of that, she said he was unfriendly. On top of being dull, he's unfriendly.

3. Fig. victorious over something; famous or notorious for something. It was a close game, but the home team came out on top. Bill is on top in his field.

He was so surprised at being discovered. 主语惊讶是与被发现同时，还是中间有时间差？换句话说，刚被发现时并不惊讶，过了一段时间才感到惊讶，如果是这样那你就用动名词完成体。如果是同时的，你有什么理由用完成体，你告诉我！不要总是提问而不经过自己思考！要学会举一反三，要真正体会动词形式和语义之间的关系。
