But, they are not performance, an interaction between two people, one of which, the performer, knows more than the spectator.

1 并列连词and，but, or, for, so 都可以用在一个句子之首，表示本句和前一句话在语义上的逻辑关系（转折、等立、选择、因果等），其作用类似于连接性状语。作者这里的but就是这种用法，只不过作者为了强调转折关系，故意用了逗号（口语中作一个较长的停顿），引起读者或听话人的注意，期待下文。这个but 也可用nevertheless，however替换，但不如but的语气强烈。

2 they are not performance 这就是but后的主句。an interaction between two people是performance的同位语，然后two people后接定语从句。

3 翻译时，最好把performance的同位语另外译成一个句子：但是，这些雕塑并不是演出。演出是演员和观众之间的互动，演员比观众了解的多。
