Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across the icy water of the North Atlantic, huge iceberg was suddenly spotted by a lookout. After the alarm had been given, the great ship turned sharply to avoid a direct collision. The Titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the immense walk of ice which rose over 100 feet out of the water beside her. Suddenly, there was a slight trembling sound from below, and the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had been so faint that no one though that the ship had been damaged.
1) there was a slight trembling sound from below - 等于 there was a slight sound that trembled from below 吗？即这里的trembling是现在分词短语作前置定语，相当于定语从句？
2) 这里The noise had been so faint为什么用过去完成时，而没有用一般过去时？

听到响声之后船长才下去查看，went down。而声音的响度和穿的受损都是went down这个过去动作之前的，所以用过去完成时。如果还是用一般过去时，会让读者误以为声音还在响，船长下去后船才受损。过去完成时告诉你动作发生的先后顺序。
