struggle to do是“努力”还是“难以”

I was not the best student when it came to writing tests. I had to work extra hard to get good marks, although I enjoyed learning. Anyway, this class that I truly enjoyed still had me struggling to do well on my tests. My teacher willingly helped me and was always willing to answer my questions, and I greatly appreciated it.

请问老师，这句话中struggle to do well是理解成“努力取得了好成绩”还是“难以取得好成绩”？感觉是相反的意思。struggle to do什么时候理解成难以做某事呢？

struggle vt.奋力;努力;尽力(英文解释： If you struggle to do something, you try hard to do it, even though other people or things may be making it difficult for you to succeed.)

They had to struggle against all kinds of adversity.他们不得不同一切困境做斗争。

Those who have lost their jobs struggle to pay their supermarket bills. 那些失业的人们想方设法以支付超市的账单。
