-ing分词还是不定式

A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.

为什么不能用to support，用supporting我能理解，但是为什么 provide ……to不可以呢？

你并没有理解为什么用supporting。supporting是现在分词作evidence的定语，现在分词作定语，分词的动作与谓语时间具有同时性，即等于that supports the theory...。如果用不定式作定语，则不定式表示的动作还没有发生。这就导致逻辑不通。已经提供了证据，证据却还不支持某理论，这是逻辑混乱。所以这里不能用不定式作定语。语法分析与逻辑分词是分不开的。逻辑上讲不通的分析一定是错误的分析。
