2 might be to do sth 结构疑问

Researchers thought they might be able to use those similarities to learn a dead language, as long as they understood another language from the same "family".

They chose two dead languages that are over 3000 years old. One is Linear B, which they compared with Greek. Linear B was first understood in 1953, but

researchers say this is first time it has been translated by a computer. The next goal for the team might be to try translating Linear A.

Unlike Linear B, no one knows what language family Linear A comes from, so it won't be easy.

1) 为什么不是that were over 3000 years old ? are 要改成 were 吗？

2) 这里的might be to do - 第一次遇到，这里显然不是系表结构，而是be to的安排计划表示将来的时态。那为什么还可以说成might be to - 可能计划、可能安排吗？

3) try to do sth 和 try doing sth - 区别应该是：不定式表示尝试着去做这件事。而动名词表示这件事已经做了，效果未知。那么，按照这种理解，我无法理解这里的

try translating Linear A. 我认为这里应该改成try to translate Linear A. 对吗？

1）that are over 3000 years old是指到现在已有3000多年了，当然要用现在时。犹如一个人现在是多大年龄了，要用现在时是一个道理。

2）be to do 属于系表结构，不定式是表语。其中一个意思表示安排、计划做某事。might 表示推测和可能性，不是完全肯定。

3）你的理解有误。try to do sth 是努力去做某事，try doing sth.是尝试着做某事，所以 try translating 的意思是试着翻译。
