最近刚好在关注介词这一块，我就斗胆代曹老师回答一下，回答内容只代表我的理解，曹老师的教学经验丰富，确实深受网友们的喜爱，题外话！

dios网友能问出这样好的问题，首先值得肯定。其次也暴露出我国英语教学上的一些问题，比如哪些用法是惯用法（不好解释或者能解释也意义不大，记住就完了），哪些并不是惯用法，而且是可以解释的。言归正传，你的这个问题完全是可以解释的，这种用法本来就是on的用法之一，表示方位，而不是我们常见到的“在某个平面上”的用法，也可能是大家思考的少，没想过只是记住就完事了！

Prepositions and adverbial particles by Hill一书中的P115：

A.3 On indicating position with reference to a place/thing.

1.‘Do you know the way to Ware Street, please?’ ‘Yes. Take the first road on your right, and then the second on your left.’

2.  We saw cows on all sides.

3.  It is sunnier on that side.

4.  A policeman stood on one side of the thief, and a soldier on the other.

5.  John was on the other side of the road.

English prepositional idioms by Wood一书中的P62:

To express direction in relation to some person or object.

1.Take the first turning on your right.

2.Enter by the door on the left-hand side as you approach the building.

English Prepositions Explained 2010版的P16有一个关于介词的用法总结的表，没法上传图片，就只列其中一栏，值得一看：

Horizontal, lateral to the viewer ------beside, alongside, on the right/left…

这本English Prepositions Explained很值得一看，你的问题在这一本书上还有解释，内容比较零散，我就不列出来，自己看。

我觉得你的这个问题很好理解，Cambridge Dictionary就有解释。

之所以用on,因为my left 指my left side（剑桥字典有解释）. on the/one's left/right 形成了一种常见用法。当然on my left. left 是名词。而且on my left 也可以说to my left. 意思相同。the和one's 也都可以。根据语境，还可以用from the left. 请看该词典的例句：

1. First I'll introduce the speaker sitting on my left.

2. It's the street to the left of the hotel.

3. Take the first on the left.

4. In this photo, my wife is the woman standing on/to my right.

        使用什么介词，最好是查词典，而且根据英汉对照来体会。例如《牛津英语搭配词典》就有以下实例：

        from the left 从左边，on the / your left  在左方，to the/your left 向左边，to the left of ... 在...的左边
