关于过去完成时的疑问

老师，我在做新概念2，第148页的练习后对照答案发现，下面这两句也可用过去完成时，感到有点疑问，请教老师解答，学生在此感谢了。

1. I was most surprised to see that the man was Ted Hale. We were或had been at the same school years ago.这句话中had been用过去完成时好理解，因为发生在I was most surprised to see之前，但是否应该把ago改成before好些呢？

2. We were great friends, but one day we quarrelled and I never saw或had never seen him again.可是这句话为什么可以用过去完成时had never seen him again，这并不是发生在we quarrelled之前呀？

1. 按语法规则，应该改为years before. 但也有人把ago和完成时连用，但通常被认为是错的。也许是出题定答案时，were 和had been 都对，可能疏忽了使用后者时，ago应该改为before.

2. 比较保险是用saw, 但过去完成时也说的过去，因为这是回忆过去，虽然在quarreled 之后，但相对其它的提到的事可能相对而言是过去的过去。
