如果按现代语法来分析这个句子末尾的as分句，是否是as分句作比较状语分句，修饰set in Venice这个ed分句？这样分析正确吗？还是说后面的分句是作定语，修饰 Venice？

按照现代语法分析，as (it was) illustrated for the first production of the opera in 1881为as比较分句作名词的修饰语，修饰the third act.。set in Venice是插入性定语，把act和as分句分隔了。

赞同曹老师的解答。把as illustrated for the first production of the opera in 1881，分析为as比较分句，作名词 the third act 的修饰语。关于as 的这种省略用法，里面有一个很大的区别，我补充两点。

1. 先看两个例句：

Attach and fix the tap securely, as illustrated.

We have two systems as illustrated in Figure 2.

以上两句，as 从句都省略了成分，但它们的省略是不一样的。

(1) as illustrated，是比较状语从句，即传统语法的非限制性定语从句。as 指代整个前文，而as作从句的主语，故省略的是 is。不是 it is。

(2) as illustrated in Figure 2，也是比较从句，但不是状语从句，不是修饰谓语动词，而是two systems的定语修饰语。as 是从属连词，故省略的是they are，不是is。

2. as illustrated 经常用于科普文章和议论文体。
