while, as, when的用法

He ran his master's errands, washed the bottles, mixed the drugs, spread the plasters, and finally, while the stipulated term drew toward its close, actually took part in the daily practice of his preceptor.

这是一道改错题，答案说吧while改成as，请问老师这里可以把while改成when吗？

表达 “随着......” 之意，而且从句的主语表示 “时间概念”，此时，一般使用 as 引导时间状语从句，不用 when 或 while。例如：

as time goes by
as time went by
as time goes on
as time went on
as time passes
as time passed
