be afraid of doing sth 和 to do sth 辨析

教科书上例句:

He is not afraid of making a speech in front of many people.

请问老师，如果说成He is not afraid to make a speech in front of many people. 可以吗？二句话含义有差别吗？

可我感觉书上错了，这里应该用be afraif to do...才对。

He is afraid to wake his wife. （害怕；不敢）

He is afraid of waking his wife.（担心；恐怕）

又如：

She was afraid to meet my eye.

她不敢正眼看我。（不能译成“担心；恐怕”）

不定式和 of doing...，是有这个差别。现代英语，这个差别可能在缩小，有的人比较随便使用。

表示害怕突发事件，一般用 afraid of + -ing。

I don't like to drive fast because I'm afraid of crashing.

我不爱开快车，因为怕撞车。

"Why are you so quiet ？""I'm afraid of waking the children."

“你怎么这么安静？”“我怕吵醒孩子。”

在其他情况下，既可以用 afraid of + -ing ，也可以用 afraid + 动词不定式，意思并无明显不同。

I'm not afraid of telling / to tell her the truth .

我不怕告诉她真相。

表示“害怕做某事”或“不敢做某事”，be afraid 之后既可以接to do，也可以接 of doing，意义相同。但如果要表示“恐怕将出现什么”或“担心会发生什么”，则只能用 be afraid of doing。比较：

I'm afraid to cross / of crossing the single-plank bridge. 我不敢过这个独木桥。

I'm afraid of falling into the river. 我怕掉进河里。
