go to school“上学”多笼统地用于上中小学。

1. go to primary school “上小学”，go to middle/high school “上中学”，go to university/college “上大学”等都不用冠词，它们是指不同的课程等级或不同的学习阶段。

2. 上某主修课程的学校前通常也不用冠词。如：

I'm fixing to go to graduate school. 我打算去读研究生。

If he'd attended music school, how might things have been different? 如果他上过音乐学校，事情会有怎样的不同呢？

Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer. 还有一位71岁才上法律学校的男士,现在他已成为一名优秀的律师。

▲ 但有时也有用冠词的。如：

Richard's grandfather insisted on that he attend a law school.  里查德的爷爷坚持让他上法律学校.

3. 若学校指其属性而不指所学课程，则通常要加冠词。如：

Did you go to a state school or a private school?  你上的是公立学校还是私立学校？

She was set on going to an all-girls school. 她执意要去女子学校上学。

She sent her son to a boarding school in the East. 她送儿子上了东部的一所寄宿学校。
