Work in groups. Choose one of the situations and make a conversation.

请问这里的 in groups 可以换成 in pairs 吗？

句中的 in groups 可以换成 in pairs，但意思不同：in pairs 指两人一组，in groups 指两人或多人一组（意思是“按小组”“以小组为单位”“三五成群地”“三三两两地”等）。如：

The children work in pairs. 孩子们两人一组进行活动。

The desks were arranged in pairs. 桌子两张两张地排列着。

Do the next exercise in pairs. 下一个练习两人一组进行。

These earrings are only sold in pairs. 这些耳环只能成对出售。

指两人一组时也可用 in twos。如：

You will be working in twos. (=in pairs) 工作时你们将两两结对。

类似的还有 in threes, in fours, in fives 等。如：

The students are lined in fives. 学生们五人一排。

You can walk in pairs or in fours. 女孩子们或两人或四人一组走。
