extend for 还是 extend to 辨析

"Ghost nets" are a serious problem along Australia's northern coastline; they can extend for

more several hundred meters in length.

为什么不是extend to ? 而是extend for 呢？

我查询了词典，有如下2个例句：

(1) extend for +时间名词 (表示持续/延续时间长度)，+长度名词(表示延神长度)

The show has been extended for another six weeks.展览会又延长了六周。

The caves extend for some 18 kilometers.那些洞穴深约18公里。

(2) extend to +长度名词(表示延神具体长度是多少)

The table extends to 220 centimeters. 桌子伸展后长220厘米。

The main stem will extend to around 12ft, if left to develop naturally.如果任其自然生长，主干可以长到约12英尺。
