▲instead of是介词，但却是连词的用法，因为它连接两个并列的成分。
We just had soup instead of a full meal.我们没有吃全餐，只喝了汤。
Will you go to the party instead of me?你替我赴宴好吗?
Shall we have fish instead of meat today?今天我们不吃肉吃鱼好吗?
Taking exercise every day makes him look younger instead of older. 每天锻炼身体使他看起来年轻而不显老。
He walks slowly instead of quickly. 他走路缓慢, 而不快速。
We went to the Biology class instead of attending the English lesson. 我们去上生物课而不去上英语课。
He has been playing all afternoon instead of getting on with his work. 他整个下午一直在玩, 没有继续工作。
She was let off with a fine instead of being sent to prison. 没让她入狱，而是罚款了事。
We shall have tea in the garden instead of in the house. 我们将在花园里用茶, 而不在室内用。
▲两点注意
1. 当 instead of 连接的动词与前面是完全同等的成分时，则根据前面的动词形式确定：
He wishes to go instead of stay at home.他希望去而不留在家里。（同为并列不定式）
I went to borrow a book instead of buy one. 我去借了一本书，而不是买了一本书。（同上）
That increased instead of decreased our courage. 那不但没有减弱反而增强了我们的勇气。（并列谓语，后接同一个宾语时）
2. 当 instead of 连接的动词与句子的谓语动词不是完全等同时，其后用动名词形式。
Let's play cards instead of watching television. 咱们玩纸牌吧，别看电视了。
We went to the Biology class instead of attending the English lesson. 我们去上生物课而不去上英语课。
He has been playing all afternoon instead of getting on with his work. 他整个下午一直在玩, 没有继续工作。
She was let off with a fine instead of being sent to prison. 没让她入狱，而是罚款了事。
