The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen.

请问句中的 Mother’s Day 可以换成 Mothers’ Day 吗？因为我觉得“母亲节”，是所有母亲的节日，应该用复数才对吧？或者至少用复数也可以吧？

前面两位老师的分析都有道理。英语通常是用 Mother’s Day，因为每个人的母亲只有一个，所以通常用单数形式的所有格；但同时考虑到母亲节是所有母亲的节日，所以也有用复数所有格的 Mothers’ Day。但比较而言，用单数所有格的 Mother’s Day 要远比复数所有格的 Mothers’ Day 更普通。下面是一些辞书中用复数所有格 Mothers’ Day 的例句：

It is the custom for children to give their mothers presents on Mothers’ Day.（《英语惯用法大词典》）

The explosions took place in shopping centres as crowds of people were shopping for Mothers’ Day.（《柯林斯高有英语词典》见crowd词条，不是mother词条）

Mother's Day 是英语固定说法，不能替换为Mothers Day。类似的还有Father's Day。但在非正式文体，你会遇到’省略的现象，但应该理解为单数为宜。也许其中的道理是对一个家庭而言，只能有一个mother和father,所以用单数。尽管“母亲节”，是所有母亲的节日，但也要用单数。其他的一般用复数，如Children's Day, Teachers Day，International Women's Day等。

这个问题要分两个层面来看：

作为个人使用，Mother's Day 和 Mothers' Day 都是可以的，取决于你把它看着是庆祝自己母亲的节日，还是天下所有母亲的节日。但是，“母亲节”作为法定节日，其官方名称是 Mother’s Day。也就是说美国确定“母亲节”为法定节日，制定该法的时候，用的是 Mother's Day，而美国是属于判例法国家，所以Mother's Day作为这个先例而被沿用。父亲节也是同样的道理。
