not...until...的强调句式问题

1. 第一个省略号放的是什么？

until 可以是介词，也可以是连词。作为介词，until 后接名词或动名词结构。作为连词until后接从句，且从句可采用省略结构。你的二个句子中until都是连词，后接从句。第一个句子省略了主语和系词，补全则为 until it was late in the afternoon.

until是无论是介词还是连词，都不可能后接主句。你就不该提问until后接的是主句还是从句这个问题。这种提问本身就是该打板子的。until+名词性结构或从句都是主句中的时间状语，强调句型强调时间状语。that 后是原来的主句内容。
