US（美国）前面必须要有定冠词吗

Christmas is a very important festival in Britain and US.

有人认为这个句子是错的，应该在 US 前面加上定冠词。是这样吗？

在正式文体，要用the. 非正式文体，也有不用的时候，比较少见，应该视为不规范用法。但US作形容词时，视其后修饰的名词的具体需要，有时可以不用the, 如：in US history on US soil. Joe Biden is US President.

你要搞清楚来龙去脉，否则遇到其它国名还有可能出错。

国家名字为专有名词，前面不加the，但是国家名字如果含有s，或者有“复数”的含义，则要加the。所以：

America 不加the；

the United States （of America）因为states含有s，表复数（美国由50个州组成），加the；

the US 是 the United States的缩写，所以 the 不能省；

Britain 不加the；

the United Kingdom 联合王国，有复数的含义，要加the；

the UK 是 the United Kingdom 的缩写，所以要加the；

......
