feel to be true与feel true

Readers tend to believe what they feels to be true.

这是一篇英语作文里的一句话，请问这里是不定式做宾语修饰feel吗（用feels主谓不一致），如果是的话请问为什么不直接用feel true呢？

这里的 what 是 feels 的宾语， to be true 是宾语补足语，to be 不能省略。如：

We felt the plan to be a wise one. 我们认为那项计划很明智。(= We felt that the plan was wise. )（此时不省略）（摘自《英汉多功能词典》新编升级版p.608）
