跟在all后面的定冠词the为什么经常可省略？

Of all (the) English writers then, Dickens had the most readers.

The reading-room is open to all (the) students of the English department,

He has been working all (the) day.

这个语法结构上ALL+名词和ALL the+名词都是OK，但是这个意思多数语境还是不一样的呀，不一样也是在于THE/THIS这个好像钟摆一样的手在指示。不否认某些语境两者类似，尤其后面接后置定语的时候，但多数时候意思有差别的呀。
