2 过去时态的特殊用法

曹老师端午安康！向曹老师请教如下题目：

"I wondered if I could have a word with you." The past tense used in the sentence refers to a _______.

A. past event for exact time reference

B. present event for tentativness

C. present event for unsertainty

D. present event for politeness

此题为2017年专四语法题目，答案是B选项，但个人觉得D选项用过去时态表示礼貌也没有不妥，故向曹老师请教选项D错在哪里?

D不算错。过去时可以表示委婉，避免过于直接提要求。有的语法书说这种请求带有试探性，其实这种用过去时表示试探本身就是一种委婉礼貌的语言。在人际交往中，你提一个要求，咄咄逼人，别人如果因某种原因无法满足你的要求，答应你吧，他实际做不到。拒绝你吧，又很难开口说不。于是，你用过去时提出要求，给人的感觉是你曾有这种要求，其实已经过去了。对方如果无法满足你的要求，说no比较容易。你给对方提供一个说no而不至于尴尬的语境，这就是委婉礼貌的语言。这也是过去时表示委婉的背后的原理。

曹老，不好意思，我又和您不同了。答案只能选B. 因为过去进行时表式礼貌，而不是一般过去时。英语习惯上是Ｉ was wondering ...表述婉转，朗文字典有解释，而问题句是一般过去时的wondered. 这次我提供具体依据吧：

We can use the past continuous to make sentences and requests seem more polite. This is because they sound less definite, more temporary and more gentle. When using the past continuous in this way, it is possible to use state verbs.

例句： I was hoping that I could borrow the car?
