名词与从句并列（比如where从句与名词并列）

Scotland were always able to get a man in between the ball and where we wanted it to be.

这个句子有一点我不明白，在 between the ball and where we wanted it to be 中，为什么将名词 the ball 与状语从句 where we wanted it to be 并列呢？

这里的 where 不是简单的连接副词，其实它就是语法上所谓的缩合型连接副词，它相当于 the place where（即这里的从句本质上相当于一个带定语从句的名词）。即：

Scotland were always able to get a man in between the ball and (the place) where we wanted it to be. 苏格兰队总能让一个人截住球路，不让我们把球踢到我们想去的地方。

又如下面这句：

它相当于：

The law requires a cooling-off period between the time (when) a gun is purchased and (the time) when it may be possessed.
