关于句子结构问题

When he was done the kitchen looked new, the way it looked when they were first shown the house.

请教一下各位老师，这个句子主干是the kitchen looked new 吧，但是the way it looked 使用倒装我在语法书上怎么也找不到相关的知识点， they were first shown 这里为什么使用被动语态？好奇怪啊，我有点理解不了。

the way (that) it looked when they were first shown the house. = as it looked when they were first shown the house. 这个从句是对new的补充说明。就像第一次让他们看房子时的样子一样。（他们第一次看到的就是新房子）。they指房子的主人。卖房子的人带他们看房子，被动语态则表示他们被带着看房子。
