as引导的比较分句或方式状语从句本身可以是个带有if从句的虚拟条件句。由于as从句结构与主句结构相同，通常as从句的主谓结构省略，只保留if 从句，得到as if 引导的方式从句或比较状语从句。例如：
He speaks English as he would speak it if he were an Englishman. as 从句为方式状语从句。本句中he would speak it与主句结构相同，省略后听话人可以从主句结构推知省略了什么，所以通常he would speak it省略，得到下句：
He speaks English as if he were an Englishman. as if引导方式状语从句
He speaks English as fluently as he would speak it if he were an English man. as从句为比较状语从句。同理，通常省略与主句结构相同的he would speak it, 得到下句：
