第二段For example, a grandmotherly woman staffing an animal rights booth at a recent street fair was distributing a brochure that encouraged readers not to use anything that comes from or is tested in animals-no meat, no fur, no medicines. Asked if she opposed immunizations, she wanted to know if vaccines come from animal research. When assured that they do, she replied, "Then I would have to say yes." Asked what will happen when epidemics return, she said, "Don't worry, scientists will find some way of using computers." Such well-meaning people just don't understand.

这段话的倒数第二句“scientists will find some way of using computers”被翻译成“科学家将会通过计算机找到一些方法”，接近于by；从阅读理解上来说这样翻译很通顺，但是根据of的从属意义，难道不应该翻译成“科学家们将会找到一些使用计算机的方法”吗，接近于for，不过显然这样翻译的话逻辑不符合。不知道是不是因为中文教材选择例句或者翻译的原因，以前学习的过程中这种情况下of基本是理解成for的；不知道在英语环境的原文文章中，of这种接近于by的用法是不是很常见呢？

（2）然后在搜索of的用法过程中，我又产生了另外一个问题。

牛津词典给出的of用法中有这么一条（可用百度翻译查of，牛津词典义项第9条）：

of用于由动词转化的名词之后，of之后的名词可以是受动者，也可以是施动者

the arrival of the police (= they arrive) 

警察的到来

criticism of the police (= they are criticized) 

对警察的批评

对于“criticism of the police”的理解，例句把of解释成to，“对”警察的意思；但根据从属关系，我认为of理解成from也没什么问题，即“（来自）警察的批评”。

我搜索了“criticism of the police”之后，发现在英语文章中，该短语确实多被理解成“对警察的批评”，这是否是习惯用法呢？

那么该怎么判断of之后的名词是施动者还是受动者呢？比如这里如果我想表达“（来自）警察的批评”，英语该怎么表达呢？
