本来，你说的 more a than b，很好。把 beautiful 当作 a, 把 useful 当作 b，就对了。即：more beautiful than useful.（取舍关系，也叫择比关系。即：美丽的而不是有用的）

He is really grieving over the loss of something more beautiful than useful.
（注：beautiful more than useful 和 more beautiful than useful，都是 something 的定语）
