1 how在这里=that，引导名词性从句作宾语。how的这种用法为非正式用法，改为that后意义不变。

2 call on/upon为短语动词，可以后接复合宾语，call on/upon sb to do sth. 不定式为宾补。这个句型可以用被动语态，sb is called on/upon to do sth. 不定式在被动结构中改称主语补足语，不是介词on/upon的宾语。when called upon to read = when he was called upon to read. 有的不及物动词+介词构成的短语动词是可以用被动结构的，如 look at sb/sth. sb/sth is looked at.
