The word bai means white，and while Chinese is pronunced “Bai”，so maybe this is ___their name derives from.
这是一道高二填词题，在空白处填写合适的单词。这道题答案是where，我填的what，因为我觉得derive from后缺成分。请问老师为什么填where呢？

如果不考虑上下文语境，只看语法结构，那么，填 what 和 where 都正确。
1. this is where their name derives from.（where 是融合性关系副词，= the place where）
2. this is what their name derives from.（what 是融合性关系代词，= the thing that）
填 where 还是 what 与 this 的指代有关，因为这是主系表结构。问题是：主语 this 指代什么？如果指代 white 这种颜色，那么空格处填 what。如果指代前文描述的背景，指某物源自何处，那么空格处填 where。显然是后者。
