老师您好，对于这个句子 This means that our noses are limited to perceiving those smells which float through the air, ... 我的理解是宾语从句中are limited to perceiving为谓语，those smells为宾语。实义动词为perceive。

疑问：可不可以根据SVA句式，将are limited 作为谓语，to perceiving those smells理解为状语？limit不是及物动词吗？为什么后跟介词动名词？

麻烦老师回答一下我的问题。

our noses are limited to perceiving those smells which float through the air

这个宾语从句为被动语态。主动语态的结构为limit our noses to sth。把我们的鼻子（的嗅觉）限制在...的范围内。our noses为宾语，to介词短语为范围状语。改为被动语态后be limited后，limit的宾语作了主语，to介词短语仍然是范围状语。由于to是介词，所以后接动名词短语作介词to的宾语。
