形容词last的语义之一为least likely，表示否定意义。例如《韦氏高阶》例句：You are the last person I would expect to see here. [=I never expected to see you here] 即the last+名词+定语从句，定语从句其实表示的是否定意义。你的句子中非肯定词ever的使用也可以证明定语从句其实表示的是否定意义，即 Man never need make such an invention. 所以，本句中虽然在形式上need作为情态动词用在了肯定句中，但在语义上，该句其实是非肯定语境，表示否定意义。

the last thing在一定语境下是否定意义的，因此 need可以作情态动词用，加原形，也可以采用need的普通动词用法
