名词修饰名词，这中间是省略了什么吗
今天看到经济学家科斯论文里的两句话：This paper is concerned with those actions of business firms which have harmful effects on others. The standard example is that of a factory the smoke from which has harmful effects on those occupying neighboring properties. 后面一句我实在读不明白。
1.The standard example is that of a factory 这个that指的什么？
2.这里The standard example is that of a factory the smoke from which...factory 后面直接跟了the smoke，这是中间省略了什么吗？
按我对句意的理解，that 值得就是the smoke,可是这里为什么the smoke又能直接接在factory后面？

1 that 在此为名词替代词，替代the example, that of a factory=the example of a factory. 用that替代the example, 避免重复名词。
2 the smoke of which...= whose smoke, 为修饰 a factory的定语从句。
